Over the Counter medications

Prescribing of over the counter medications has changed.

  • We can generally no longer prescribe medications that are available to buy over the counter from your pharmacy or supermarket.
  • Your doctor will not be able to provide you with a prescription for medications that you can buy without a prescription from a pharmacy or supermarket (even if you do not pay for prescriptions).
  • This includes medications such as vitamin D, antihistamines, steroid nasal sprays, simple analgesia, haemorrhoid creams, many constipation treatments, toothpastes, sun creams, nappy creams, verucca and wart treatments, head lice treatments, antacids tablets and liquids.

A regular check up with the GP or practice nurse is required every 6 to 12 months to ensure the medication you are being prescribed is still appropriate. If you miss a medication review appointment your GP may refuse to issue you with a repeat prescription until this review has taken place.

Some medicines such as HRT and the contraceptive pill are not available on repeat prescription and you will require a nurse or GP appointment before a repeat can be issued.

This practice is set up for the Electronic Prescription Service.

This means that we can send your prescription to your chosen chemist directly saving you having to come down to the surgery.

Please ask your local pharmacy or reception to select your “Nominated Pharmacy”. This can easily be changed if needed.
